Title: hullo from the library
Description: !!!!!!

gianthead - September 28, 2006 04:21 PM (GMT)
Hullo folks!

As those nearest to me will probably know, l've just started Yoony in the wild city of Chester.
Unluckily, technology hasn't quite reached my house, at least there's no working internet so we haven't much to do at night except go out to the pub. l've complained, of course, so they put my case down as urgent and said they'd have a poke at nextdoor's internet in the next few weeks. ln the mean time...
l've had a fresher's fayre, free sweets, a boat trip, lots of talks and bits of paper, library card with my amazing passport photo and a few fibonacci sequences. Also mad alcoholic housemates, who like doing washing up and similar wierd things. And one of them locked her keys in her room today :rocks: , l wish l'd put a tenner on it at the beginning of the week.
l've got some pictures of a few trees and whatnot on my phone but l'm not sure how to put them on my laptop.
Anyway, if anyone sees this topic anytime soon, reply or something sometime.
Oh yeah and l showed some folks how to juggle pool balls.

Yours Sincerely
GH

Johnw - September 28, 2006 05:22 PM (GMT)
Aha... was wondering what was the status of your internet! (Next few weeks!? :o)

Sounds like you're having a good time then...

Dunno about the pics and the phone... I'm sure one of us loonies can fix it when we come up to visit... if you've not worked it out by then. :P (What's the phone model?)

Did you measure the windows yet?

Do your housemates dance?

Are you able to send emails from your phone? If so then just email the pics to your address and pick them up the next time you're online.

Or you could just send pic messages to the geek freaks (and I mean that with a fuzzy-wuzzy hug) on here.

:P

yes, but only when they're drunk, which is most of the time :drink:

Gianthead, you need to learn the rules of uni.

1. Do not attend any lectures until the 3rd term (or in my case the 3rd year), and then only to identify a swot who can lend you their notes. Some swots are so in love with the subject they'll happily explain everything to you over a cup of tea or ten.

2. Tesco is for posh kids with more money than sense. Go to Netto, Aldi or Lidl to buy weird foreign bread and chocolate you've never heard of. Pretend you bought them at the local deli and everyone will be well impressed. The only exception to this rule is cola. Never buy cheap, own-brand cola. It tastes like crap, even when diluted with rum or vodka. Stick to The Real Thing. If you can get a job at Netto etc you'll be able to get a staff discount as well. Bingo!

3. Washing up? F*ck that! Offer to do your housemates' shopping in return for your washing up duties. Students are lazy arses and will do anything to avoid leaving the house. If you do end up having to put your hands in the oily orange water that always collects in student sinks, wash everything in sight, even if it's someone else's pots. Clean the kitchen as if your life depends on it. Your housemates will love you, and their parents will too.

4. Don't spend too much on booze unless you know your limits. There's no point in drinking loads and then puking 40% of it into the gutter. Limit yourself to cheap alcohol and treat yourself to the good stuff on special occasions (ie saturday night).

5. Don't rush out and buy loads of text books. See if last years students are selling theirs. Pretend to be interested in the adverts and go to view a few different books. If they look in mint condition they obviously weren't used. If those students can pass without reading these books, so can you.

6. Identify sources of cheap/free stuff. Happy hours are a good start, but you should look in less obvious places too. OAPs coffee mornings are great (biscuits and fairy cakes), as are private parties in pubs (they never notice a few extra guests running off with half the finger buffet).

7. Never listen to people who graduated more than 10 years ago.

:old:

StrayToaster - October 4, 2006 02:24 PM (GMT)
Hey! I graduated more than ten years ago!

Granted, no on ever listens to me, but still. I was in love with my subject, attended almost every single lecture, went out to clubs/gigs/pubs 6 days out of seven, saw over 300 bands in three years, erm, _danced_ with a load of girls, have the bestest time and still got my degree.

Yes, I turned up to lectures with sunglasses on, from houses other than my own, but still.

I still have all my textbooks (that is more an aversion to selling any book than anything else)

Oh, I am also not a very good role model. Though I am a good roll model, now resembling a jam doughnut. Years of alcohol, good living and not-dancing with dancing girls does that to a boy.

*sigh*

I wish I were young again. Then I would have done that PhD instead of turning it down to earn CASH. With which you can pay for dancing girls, but that goes against the grain. Life passes by quickly. Just like:

Sir Toaster of Stray,

I am indeed one of that special bunch o' people wot graduated more than 10 years ago. I must admit that I can't remember much from back then - pickled brain, too much dancing (for I was a girl back then) and seeing loads of bands before they were famous (except Bob Mould who was already past his best). I can still remember seeing Jarvis Cocker for the first time and falling in love instantly. Pulp were just a local band at the bottom of the bill. Nirvana were playing to half-empty venues. The Leadmill was still a great club. Sheffield Hallam University was still Sheffield City Polytechnic. The University of Sheffield Arts Tower had a superb paternoster. Oooh, it's all coming back to me now...

Ahhh, those were the days eh?

:old:

steved14 - October 5, 2006 09:11 AM (GMT)
HEY HU , just to show i do come on , what u think about text ?

StrayToaster - October 5, 2006 01:43 PM (GMT)
text? dunno, sometimes I get it confused with TeX, or LaTeX. Which isn't the same as latex, alas.

Tell you what, steved14, what say I ignore you and try to chat up Ms Herring instead, eh? I fnd her much more interesting. Offense meant.

Ah, the Polys. Friday night at Lestah Poly was a top disco eve. I saw Nirvana at (I think) Rock City in Nottingham before NEvermind broke. I saw the Manics (twice, and twice they didn't show up) just after 'Stay Beautfiul' was released.

Those were indeed the days. I can't argue with that.

Herring - October 5, 2006 09:42 PM (GMT)
By the sound of it we must be about the same age

You can certainly try to chat me up, but I warn you that I can't dance. Actually, please do chat me up - it doesn't happen as often as I'd like these days. And bring on the latex. Please. Not that I'm desperate or anything. Well, yes, I am desperate. But that can be our little secret. Or not. Anyone else reading this will have to forget what they've seen. Who am I kidding? Nobody will read this. Except Mr Stray. Who is always welcome.

Guest - October 6, 2006 12:37 PM (GMT)
I had guessed before that we were of similar vintage.

And fret not, *everyone* can dance. Or no one can. I can never remember which way round that goes. Or is it about singing? I digress.

I shall bring the latex then. Sounds like a deal. And also the kohl. And the velvet and moleskein. Oh dear, that probably makes things worse, doesn't it?

There are so many anecdotes I could tell here that it would fill a book. A book that would be banned on taste and decency charges. And I wouldn't want to corrupt any people who are still reading at this point. Except Ms. Herring. Is it just us here? You are also most welcome.

StrayToaster - October 6, 2006 12:38 PM (GMT)
Pay no attention to that guest, that 13th at the table.

Just hark me instead.

gianthead - October 6, 2006 02:45 PM (GMT)
thanks for the tips Herring :D
Did you go to Sheffield poly?

StrayToaster - October 6, 2006 02:55 PM (GMT)
*damn* there is someone else here. But it is alright, tis Ms GH.

Herring - October 6, 2006 06:35 PM (GMT)
I rather like it being just the two of us - we can *ahem* dance in private.

Gianthead's just perving on us. ;)

Perish the thought! I was educated 'up on the hill' (in Poly speak that means the University of Sheffield). :P

Johnw - October 6, 2006 06:47 PM (GMT)
Hehehe... and the Sheffield Uni students call Sheffield Hallam "the homeless hostel"... was it the same back in your day? :D

Sheffield Uni rocks!

Herring - October 6, 2006 06:58 PM (GMT)
I seem to remember Poly students being called 'The Plebs of Pond Street' but I can't remember what we called the actual institution. It was, no doubt, very offensive. :P

Why is this topic suddenly so popular? Haven't you people got better things to do than watch two old souls dancing in the corner? I said dancing .

Johnw - October 6, 2006 07:04 PM (GMT)
Not *drinking tea* with Mr Toaster...? And I amn't watching you anyway, my eyes are averted, you can dance in peace.

This thread has been popular with me right since it started, so there! :P

Plebs of Pond Street... I like it.

Herring - October 6, 2006 09:48 PM (GMT)
Mr John, are you lucky enough to be studying at the best university in the land?

Johnw - October 6, 2006 10:28 PM (GMT)
Best university in the land...? Feel quite free to attack me for this if you wish, but in my opinion that would be Oxford... B)

Personally I amn't studying these days. I'm sure you have heard this unpleasant four letter word that goes by the name of "work". That's what I spend my days doing. I'm not an idle bugger like some. :P

Besides, should you happen to glance at my profile, you would see that I'm only 17...

My bro is living in Sheffield while his girlfriend is at uni there... hence I go up there from time to time (indeed, I am due a trip up there in the near future)... cool place. :D

Certain of the students there personally thanked me for working and paying taxes to fund their education!

l started the topic, therefore l'm in charge. l could kick Herring out and talk to Mr Toaster instead :P but l'm too nice...l think.

Didn't Worjaffa go to Sheffield? or am l imagining it?

Johnw - October 7, 2006 01:46 PM (GMT)
Yeah, he did... I'd forgotten about that... politics and philosophy or summat.

StrayToaster - October 7, 2006 01:58 PM (GMT)
Gosh. I would like to say there is enough of me to go round, but judging by the fact that every time I take my own photograph I seem to be standing in a hole (evidence) I would say there isn't. Gawd, if I were taking a picture, as I knew I would be, you would think I would have shaved. Especially if I was going to post said link there.

So, countdown, then I edit this post and remove the link. Ha!

Johnw - October 7, 2006 02:12 PM (GMT)
Aha, but I am too quick for you... I have SEEN!!!

Stereotypes are there for a reason!

StrayToaster - October 7, 2006 02:15 PM (GMT)
Ha. :)

All songs written by me. There are more than that listed there, I must fix the website. We have a weblog as well. With nothing on it. Gah, I am such a lazyhead.

Johnw - October 7, 2006 02:17 PM (GMT)
Fix the website with some MP3s!

I promise not to mock... not too much anyway... :P

StrayToaster - October 7, 2006 02:19 PM (GMT)
There will be an EP on the site before Christmas. We have a studio booked to record properly, we just want more time to practice. And learn how to play.

But see my gee-tar? It is a solid block of acrylic, and is quite heavy. If I threw it into the crowd, I would kill at least a dozen moshers. But not the dancing chicks at the back. Oh, never them.

I shall announce our first gig here, so all can come if they want. But it probably won't be until next summer.

Johnw - October 7, 2006 02:22 PM (GMT)
Nice geetar! B)

Next summer eh? I shall most likely be in attendance... :D

Herring - October 7, 2006 06:09 PM (GMT)
Hmmm. Cute. Not Mr T, but his geetar.

Just how deep is the hole you are standing in?

I think we'd make beautiful music together (again, the geetar not the owner).

Oh, alright then, yes. The Toast Man scrubs up OK. But not my type. Unless he's only about 5'5'. Seeing as I'm only... er... five foot (sounds so much better than four foot eleven and three quarters, don't you think?).

Do you have a steady stream of dancing girls? Or can I dance for your band?

Herring - October 7, 2006 06:24 PM (GMT)
Wasted? Really? Never.

I don't believe you're standing in a hole - you're just kneeling down right?

StrayToaster - October 7, 2006 07:41 PM (GMT)
It is more that everyone else is tall. They are all (except Belagoth, who is about my height) over 6ft. Me, I can stretch to 5'8" I think. Or so.

There are *always* a stream of dancing girls. Alas, my fave one moved to Noo Joirsay.

Johnw - October 7, 2006 07:43 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (StrayToaster @ Oct 7 2006, 08:41 PM)

Ehh... what a coincidence...

Why'd she do that then?

Herring - October 7, 2006 07:48 PM (GMT)
I bribed her.

:ph43r:

StrayToaster - October 7, 2006 08:12 PM (GMT)
*StrayToaster sees Ms Herring has cash and can dance.

B)

Herring - October 7, 2006 08:19 PM (GMT)
Alas, my cash is now in New Jersey (she took a lot of bribing).

And I've made no secret of the fact that I can't dance.

*Herring hangs her head in defeat and slopes off to a dark corner to cry*

StrayToaster - October 7, 2006 08:22 PM (GMT)
Aw, now that tugs the heart strings.

*StrayToaster follows into the dark corner for consolation purposes
