Title: What was your first TMBG song?

smackie9 - November 12, 2005 04:14 PM (GMT)
Mine was Puppet Head.

That depends on what is meant by the question. (Not that I would be a pedant, or anything like that, oh, no, I just like to have the question defined in terms we can all deal with. For example, if you ever get to meet me, just don't try with the double negatives, as it will grind me to a logical halt while I try to work out what is meant, and then reply. So make sure you know what the answer is, else you will have to think about my answer in terms of your question, and then see if that was what you expected.)

Do you mean: What was the first song you heard? or What was the first song you bought? Or what was the first TMBG song you wrote? Or something else my limited intelligence can't quite divine?

The first song I heard was probably their very first single. Which, coincidently, was the first I also bought. As for which of their songs I wrote, alas, none yet. What with the restraining order and all...

*edited as I can't spell what. Waht a loser. bam!*

A long time ago I heard Particle Man on TV without conciously knowing it was TMBG. I also noticed the later few shorts on CN on TV.

And in the 6th grade my friend sang songs like why does the sun shine and istanbul in our cabin. everyone threw shoes at him until he stopped.

Istanbul.

I remember it like it was yesterday...

I saw Istanbul and Particle Man on Tiny Toons, back when I was a young 'un. Then came Boss of Me. And then Experimental Film on H*R. Incidentally, that was the first song I ever bought on iTunes, so it's got a bit of significance for me.

that's a difficult one, I knew a lot of TMBG before I knew it was them if you see what I mean

I remember Fingertips, Particle Man and various others from my earliest youth.
The first song I really noticed properly was Dead, still one of my favourites even to this day

Some of the songs I've just known since the depths of forever... Shoehorn With Teeth, and Whistling in the Dark especially.

The first one I remember was Oranges. My friend Rory from college had their "rarities" cd and played it incessantly during my software design late nights. The part about millions of software designers got me at that point. Since then, the cleverness and intelligence of other songs has put them at #1 forever in my heart.

I didn't complain, but didn't take hold of TMBG greatness then. About a year latter they were touring, and in Minneapolis (near me), and I went to see them. They seemed as genuine as they were in the rarities CD, that sold me on them, and moreso.

Since them I've only had one remote chance to see them, in St. Louis, an 8 hour drive, though I added 3 hours (and an overnight hotel stay) to the drive to help 2 more TMBG fans get to the show :D (this is well worth it, in honor of TMBG). I only wish I'd been more into them during the Mink Car or earlier tours.

I hope to get them to play at my alma madre before they stop touring. It's one of my missions as a fan and friend of my alma madre.

The first TMBG song I ever heard was my mother playing me 'Scissor Man' from 'Drums and Wires' in 1979.

cyclonaut - February 8, 2006 07:37 PM (GMT)
Same here.

A buddy of mine played me a couple of tracks off of his Flood cassette tape he bought when it came out.

I was transfixed by all of the tracks he played, but Birdhouse blew me away.

Arguably, Boss Of Me, at the start of every episode of Malcolm in the Middle, although this wasn't the proper full version of the song.

Also arguably, Different Town, although it was sung by Matt Chapman.

The first proper version of a TMBG song, as sung by a John, that I heard, was Experimental Film, also on Homestar Runner. And that was the song that got me interested in them in the first place.

The first song I heard on an album was Theme from Flood.

My first song was 'Ana Ng', without realising it. For some reason, my pop music hormones only began production in late 88, and so around that time I was hearing music and getting it stuck in my head - but I wasnt following it up by finding out who sang what. 'Ana Ng' was shown on one of Channel 4's defunct late-night music shows, and the next day I found myself singing what I thought were the words to the chorus. Man, this is embarrasing. I thought the chorus was "Come into my garden", not 'Ana Ng and I are getting old". Anyway, two years later I heard Flood, became a fan, and only when I discovered their back-catalogue and heard 'Ana Ng' again did I realise it was the song that had been nailed into my subconscious for 2 years.

Sophomore Jinx - June 19, 2006 04:27 PM (GMT)
Kiss Me, Son Of God I believe. It's the first one I remember hearing, anyway.

teddyleevin - June 19, 2006 10:46 PM (GMT)
For, me...Fingertips, on albino blacksheep.

The Lone Stranger - June 20, 2006 02:56 AM (GMT)
Particle Man.

Despite the fact that I didn't appreciate it for what it was, and appreciated it for what it wasn't, it got me hooked.

Experimental Film on Homestarrunner.com

I've loved TMBG since.
