Title: Standing the (recent) test of time
Description: Just because I was thinking
StrayToaster - July 6, 2005 08:17 PM (GMT)
So what was I thinking, eh? Well, probably the title gives it away. So if you read it first, then the description, you know what I was thinking about. But I will tell you here anyhow, as the title and description don't allow much by the way of expansive paragraphs therein, and rightly so. Otherwise it would be like reading the body of the post, then reading the same amount again, with no clue as to what the second body would contain, as the title wouldn't be a summary/attention grabber, more just more meaningless waffle from me. Or whomever was writing it, but generally it would be me.
And here I was, thinking, while 'Hounds of Love' spins in the background. Not that it is recent. OK, it is to me, but I have a long memory. I come from a race with long memories.
But movng forward a decade or two. New muzak. Some is good, some is not. Most is not, as it happens. 95% of *anything* is rubbish. But I digress. Inside two sentences outside of the first digression. New. Record. Perhaps. I doubt it.
I think that there are records (I know so) that are ace to start with, then die quickly, never to be listened to again. Like Bloc Party. And British Sea Power (which, to be honest, was never *ace*)
Ignore that though. I wish to posit records that are heading towards classic status, in that they are new(ish), but still sound fresh, and better than a lot of stuff out there. I am guessing they would need to be at least six months to a year old, but predicitons of future classics welcome.
I started the damn thread, so I go first.
White Blood Cells - The White Stripes (more so than Elephant)
() - Sigur Ros
um, what with lemonade in my system, that is all I can stretch to right now.
Come on, help me out here.

Feel free to shoot me than....
System Of A Down - Toxicity
The Killers - Hot Fuss
Just my opinion. And I need a copy of White Blood Cells.

I don't know, stop looking at me like that, it wasn't me :P
Zutons, not sure about the Killers
StrayToaster - July 7, 2005 01:38 PM (GMT)
I doubt people will still be listening to either The Zutons (which is alright) or the Killers (which is tat) in six months time.
I mean, we all remember how much we liked the second Cooper Temple Clause, don't we?
System of a Down? Not only shot down in flames, but stomped on the gritty bits left over.
We are talking albums you will still be listening to the odd time in a year, and not because you come across it and wonder if it is still good. Ones that have been spun continually (though that might mean every week or so) since they were bought.

I know, and that's why I suggested the ones I did :P

I've been listening to the Toasters "Hard Band For Dead" album since it came out in 1996... I think it's still good. :P
mrhorrible - July 7, 2005 09:11 PM (GMT)
Both albums I am sure I will still be playing in years to come.
Cooper Temple Clause - only ever had one song of theirs on CD - so a bit of a moot point, but I know what you are referring to.
It's hard for me to pick out any recent albums that might also fit this category. I suppose many people will put "Up The Bracket" by The Libertines in there, but I am not that impressed.

You sure you got the right one there?
Up The Bracket is their first album, and I'm not even listening to it now let alone in 20 years. It just doesn't grab me at all.
However, their more recent album "The Libertines" is quite excellent, and may indeed become a classic.

Hmm... well 18 months since I got The Killers album, and a year since you said that, and I can confirm people are still listening to it.... :P

In other news, I can confirm that people have no taste.

I find that when I get a new album, I either love it or loathe it. Interestingly, the ones that become essential listening when new tend to become loathed and vice versa. I get bored very easily with records that I play to death when they are new.
As for recent stuff, I haven't really bought anything (having been in hospital for nearly a year and all that). I did get 'silent alarm' and sort of liked it, but now only listen to 'helicopter' (and that's only because it's on a playlist on my ipod). Not a classic.
I bought Employment by the Kaiser Chiefs and thought it was ok, but now only listen to about four tracks. Doubt it will be a classic.
On GerryW's recomendation I bought a Misty's Big Adventure CD (The Black Hole) which was pretty good until 'Microwave'. A bit too close to home. Not a classic.
Classics for the future (or should that be current classics which will, no doubt, remain as such):
Doolittle (Pixies)
Surfer Rosa (Pixies)
Green (REM)
Different Class (Pulp)
Eight Legged Groove Machine (Wonderstuff)
The Stone Roses (The Stone Roses)
Back to Basics (Billy Bragg)
Fat of the Land (Prodigy) Yeah, yeah, I know it's not cool but I can't help myself!
As for Hounds of Love, have you heard The Futureheads' cover of the song of the same name? Fandabbydozie!!!
