Title: John HENRAY
Banana - August 21, 2004 03:45 PM (GMT)
Track 1: Subliminal - Not half bad. I think it could have been improved on a little bit more, but otherwise a great way to start the album. :)
Track 2: Snail Shell - I dunno...It's a good song, but I never really liked it much. I don't think it should have been the single.
Track 3: Sleeping in the Flowers - Not a great song in any way, but I dig the part in the middle.
Track 4: Unrelated Thing - Boooooooooooring. :(
Track 5: AKA Driver - Instant classic. Flans' at his best. "Hey, NyQuil Driiiiiver! It's Nyquil Drivin' Tiiiiiiime!" :)
Track 6: I Should Be Allowed To Think - My absolute favorite on this album. No, wait, my absolute favorite TMBG song. Everything about it is just super. Especially the reference to Howl. I think this should have been the sibgle. :D
Track 7: Extra Savior Faire - A lot of people think of this song as a filler, but I don't. I think it's quite funny. Just a little to slow. :)
Track 8: Why Must I Be Sad - I think it's a creative idea to make a song almost compleatly out of Alice Cooper song titles. Catchy, too. :)
Track 9: Spy - Can you say OVERRATED?!? It's best to see this one in concert, but it's not as good on studio recoriding.
Track 10: O, Do Not Forsake Me - Boooooooooooooooooooooring. :(
Track 11: No One Knows my Plan - I still think this song has yet to grow on me. I do like it though.
Track 12: Dirt Bike - Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring. :(
Track 13: Destination Moon - This should have been a single as well. Catchy, fast paced, fun, and it grows on you. :)
Track 14: A Self Called Nowhere - A very good song that's grown on me A LOT since I first heard it. My second favorite on this album. :D
Track 15: Meet James Esnor - I love the way John Linnell sings this song. Good, but not James K. Polk. :)
Track 16: Thermostat - Once again, underrated. A lot of people seem to hate this song. "I was just talking and someone interrupted
Or was it a loud explosion?
Or is the thermostat engulfed in flames
Or is it just me?" :)
Track 17: Window - Is this supposed to be a parody of Crash Test Dummies? Once again, underrated. Really good song. One of my favorites on here. :)
Track 19: Stomp Box - Ummm...interesting. O_o Other than that I have nothing to say, except for...THIS SONG ROCKS! :)
Track 20: The End of the Tour - Everything about this song has allready been said. Third best on here. I love it when TMBG closes thir concerts with this. :D
Overall rating? B. Some patchy songs and boooooring songs, but otherwise a strong album. If you ask me, though, I prefer the earlier years without the back up band. But that's just me.

John Henry takes a while to get into. I really wasn't very fond of the album for a good 5 years, but now, its one of my favorite TMBG albums. A lot of the songs take a while to grow on you, or at least it did for me.
gianthead - August 21, 2004 09:45 PM (GMT)
You've spelt Henry wrong
it's true John Henry doesn't grab you straight away nor does it rank with Flood or Lincoln, but still worthy and a change from the catchy stuff :music:
my track ratings for JH:
great: 20,6,15,17,11
ok: 1,4,5,7,10,13,14,18
dull:2,3,8,9,12,16,19
I always found the name of John Henry very funny any way "JH?, I thought there were only 2 Johns!" :D !o!

Whew. I gotta disagree with many things said.
I've never really had to get used to any TMBG songs. Alot of times, I liked them from the start. But then..once I'd listen closer and understand the lyrics and what not..I'd like them even more.
John Henry is my favorite because there are sooooooo many of my favorite songs on one CD. Not to say that I don't have other favorites on other other albums.
I gotta leave for work in 9 minutes so I'll make this fast. <_<
Here's my rating system in order: Sucks, dull, okay, good, love it
Subliminal - Good
Snail Shell - LOVE IT
Sleeping in the flowers - Okay (I used to love it but I played it too much and got myself bored of it -_- )

I thought it was infant school teachers that said 'boys and girls', not shop assistants. :D

I guess I'm very unique like that. It was better than saying "pimps and hoes".

too long, too slow, slightly whiney, no really interesting tune or sounds
Alright, I know it's got clever lyrics. B)

John Henry is my favorite album, because it's very diverse. I remember in my high school psychology class we were talking about subliminal messages (you see where this is going). He played a bunch of songs backwards that supposibly had backward lyrics, we also listen to Subliminal. I had to have this song, and found John Henry about a year later, I wasn't net savvy yet. The only thing that bugs me about the album is in the background there is the "third John", John Ashcroft. I don't know what his politics were back then, but now he's gotten very preachy.

I've not heard of Ashcroft, perhaps you can enlighten?

John Ashcroft is the U.S. Attorney General. He's been known for being to religious in his politics. A few years ago he wanted a Greek statue covered up where he was giving a speech because it was basically nude. I don't know what he was back then, the earliest thing I remember about him is that he ran for governer of the state of Missouri. Before election day his opponet died in a plane crash but Ashcroft still lost, then he became Attorney General. That's as much as I know.

Ek. Let's not ruin this forum talking about POLITICS. Even more, let's not ruin my favorite album talking about politics!

Point noted. No more politics from across the pond.

I've only just appreciated some of the earlier tracks (before track6), I didn't listen to them before properly. Sleeping in the flowers.
