Title: What's my next move?
Description: I need help buying another album...
El Zilcho - January 24, 2005 04:59 AM (GMT)
I already own Flood and Lincoln. My favorite songs from these are Purple Toupee, Ana Ng, and Birdhouse. I also already own Experimental Film, and I love it. I have little to no interest in No, and Apollo 18 isn't on iTunes.
Seriously, what's my next move?
EDIT: I also really like We Want A Rock, Where Your Eyes Don't Go, and Your Racist Friend. I have no idea if that will help, but it's a little more descriptive than the songs I named above.

If Apollo 18 had been available I would have recommended you get it, but since it is not I think you should go for They Might Be Giants (AKA "The Pink Album").

OOOh this is difficult!
It looks as though you need to start with the Pink Album, and start thinking about the Spine next after that :D

Apoolo 18 is the one to go for, or the pink album. I'd go for those before embarking on anything too ambitious like John Henry.

I said "They Might Be Giants" because I love all their music but their older stuff is GREAT and has a special place in my heart.

Oddly, I was tempted to suggest Factory Showroom, but decided a more well rounded and definitely Older option was better.

They're all wonderful albums and, in fact, my FAVORITE is still John Henry..
But I dunno why I didn't vote for "John Henry". Their first one is just good. And I wouldn't be so quick to cancel out "No!" either. I've listened to it the least but it's not bad at all. I was really surprised.

Even odder... that was exactly what I thought as well.

I like Factory Showroom, but I don't really recommend it as one of the first few albums you buy. I dunno why, it just doesn't seem like a good starter. It might be because I think S-E-X-X-Y sounds like a bad seventies song what with all the violins and the like, but maybe that's just me being my usual critical self.
I'd heartily suggest John Henry if you're big on trumpets and AMAZING brass sections, but the one that takes the cake is The Pink Album (the eponymous one). It's crazy enough to prepare you for anything that TMBG happens to dish out. ;)

I wanted to suggest Mink or MiscT, but since you haven't got Pink or A18 yet I think you'd best start with one of those ^_^

S-e-x-x-y DOES sound kinda 70ish but not in a bad way. I think the violins are beautiful in that song.
TELL US WHAT YOU DECIDE ON!

Survey says... Pink Album!
I just bought it, and I've got to say, nice pick guys. Thanks for responding so quickly, and so... well. I'm loving these songs, especially Everything Right is Wrong Again, Don't Let's Start, and She's an Angel. Can you tell I like making lists?
From the sound of it, it'd be best for me to check out A18 or Spine next. Then, after I've gotten the hang of those, I can "advance" to John Henry or Factory Showroom. Or MiscT. Or Mink Car. Is that about right?
I notice a lot of people like the "older is better" method for these albums. It's kind of scary how many people say that on other message boards I've been at, like for The Simpsons. Is that the general consensus here, too?
Again, thanks to everyone that helped me pick this one out. Great choice.
mrhorrible - January 25, 2005 11:49 PM (GMT)
I think that its because most of us got into TMBG via the older stuff, and therefore think others will find it easier to do the same ....
LoveJohnX2 - January 26, 2005 12:47 AM (GMT)
The newer music is just different. Not in a bad way. They've grown and changed alot and it's kinda just what you're in the mood for.
Annie-Mae - January 29, 2005 01:53 AM (GMT)
I voted Mink Car but really ou should ask which one you shouldn't buy. MiscT. cause you can find those files anywhere or buy it off of the website --> www.theymightbegiants.com $9.99.
Ya see I got Then:TEY and it has 5 albums on two disks (The Pink Album, Lincon, MiscT., Giants Jubilee, and Mightathon) and it's really cool (and I bought it from the store too), but you already have Lincon so you may wanna suck up and buy Then but other wise you may want to groove to some of thier newer music, so go for Mink Car, I like that one better than the Spine, more tracks but just as many cool songs.

Ideal Album Progression:
Flood - Lincoln - Apollo 18 - Spine - Pink - Mink Car - Miscellaneous T (not really an album... but since it was mentioned, I'll include it) - Factory Showroom - John Henry
Anyone else agree with me?
Lincoln and Flood are by far the most approachable TMBG albums, while FS and JH are really deep and you have to have already built up a taste for TMBG by the time you listen to them.
