Doodles - January 11, 2005 10:21 PM (GMT)
Mac Mini... Sounds like a miniature hamburger from McDonalds... Anyhow, Mac Mini is awesome. And cute. Very cute.

And it only weighs 2.9 lbs... Awww.

<the words "mac mini" are a link to the article>

Johnw - January 11, 2005 10:40 PM (GMT)
I knew you would post about that! B)

Was just reading about it (again) and then I thought I'd come on here and see if you had posted it

mrhorrible - January 11, 2005 11:15 PM (GMT)
What is it? Ex mac user wonders.

Tell me more

O_O

it's about time they started making them that small!

Doodles - January 12, 2005 03:45 AM (GMT)
:music: No more cluttered desks...

gianthead - January 12, 2005 01:55 PM (GMT)
You can always slip it in your pocket for later :D

Spy - January 12, 2005 03:50 PM (GMT)
Cool. Ve'y cool. I want to meet someone who has one...

Doodles - January 13, 2005 09:03 PM (GMT)
Hey... I didn't see this before, but you can get them in 80GB versions... That's more storage space I have on my current laptop (I've got 40GB)!

Okay, now I REALLY want one. That small and that cheap with all that storage space? I'll take two, please. And yes, I'll take a pack of gum with that too. (That's one freaking small ipod...)

Banana - January 28, 2005 01:15 AM (GMT)
I don't see what the point of an Ipod shuffle is. Just get an ipod.

Doodles - January 28, 2005 03:33 AM (GMT)
The iPod Shuffle is amazing. It's a low cost mp3 player that is perfect for jogging. You don't even NEED a screen, and I guarantee you won't miss it.

I suggest you read this article for a review of the iPod Shuffle. It's a thing of beauty. (points if you know what I'm quoting with that statement)

The new mac mini is pointless i think, if it crashes, which it will becuase it is a mac, everything goes, because the hard drive is built in with the opperating system. Thats just stupid. The techies at my school have been getting a kick out of the fact that someone would want to spend that much money on something like that. You still need to buy all the external stuff, display, keyboard etc.

mrhorrible - March 7, 2005 03:24 PM (GMT)
Now I am trying to get one :P

Let me tell you one thing. Nowadays Macs typically DON'T crash. I've had my laptop for at least three years now and it has never crashed once. Our eMac, on the other hand, is way overtaxed and has crashed once. The hard drive WILL NOT be wiped down if it crashes.

The Mac has been completely safe guarded, going to such extremes that you can reset the Finder without having to reset anything else. If one application crashes, it won't have any effect on the others. Darwin is completely sound. No hard disk errors should occur from something as insignificant as a mere system shut down. OSX has seen to this.

If you want to talk about something stupid, you won't find it in the Mac. You may not appreciate them because you don't use one daily, or have not grown up using them as I have, but I still respect your opinion. Windows reared people generally put down the Mac because Windows is the only thing they know. It's a matter of ignorance.

No offense, just being factual.

fingertipsjjddm - March 7, 2005 08:16 PM (GMT)
Its not ignorance. I have experience with macs. I used them through elementary and middle school and my dad's office has them and I use them a lot when I go in to work for them. I'm just impatietent and Macs just don't seem to run as smoothly for me as PC's do. Its really just a preference thing though.

StrayToaster - March 7, 2005 09:28 PM (GMT)
PCs run smoothly? *guffaws exceptionally loudly*

No, really, you crack me up. Are you here all week? Do you do weddings too?

The Mac Minis are things of great lovliness. Though they aren't cheap, compared to x86 hardware.

*StrayToaster strokes his shiny, shiny powerbook and bows before St. Steve.

How anyone uses windows is beyond me. (Especially in my line of work. I use (forced, not choice) rhe3 there, my own box is debian unstable.)

I feel a why-are-we-like-fifteen-years-old-arguing-over-consoles rants coming on, but I remember the results of the age poll, and well, go figure, eh?

And look, no story to be told. Athough, if you want me to, let me tell you of the time ESR pulled a gun on me...

mrhorrible - March 7, 2005 09:39 PM (GMT)
I use PCs as a result of my line of work, and know them well. Far too well.

The whole Windows kernel is decidedly unstable compared the the UNIX kernel Mac OS X is based on, but aside from that I just prefer Macs. Always have done, so 11 years after I last used one regularly I am on the hunt for one. I used an iBook G4 recently, and boy do those rock!

Each to their own though.

Johnw - March 7, 2005 10:19 PM (GMT)
I guess I count as a Windows-reared person :(

No way do I put down Apple though, I'd just love the chance to use one.

mrhorrible - March 7, 2005 10:21 PM (GMT)
If I get an iBook, I'll bring it over :D

Johnw - March 7, 2005 10:30 PM (GMT)
If you get a Mac Mini, do you bring that over too? Or do I visit you for that? :D

mrhorrible - March 7, 2005 10:32 PM (GMT)
Eaither. But remember, I can fit (my theoretical not yet owned) it in my pocket.

Johnw - March 7, 2005 10:33 PM (GMT)
And a pocket sized monitor to go with it ^_^

Or does it just connect to a regular PC monitor?

mrhorrible - March 7, 2005 10:34 PM (GMT)
Yeah. It's got a DVI type port that comes with a VGA converter.

Best perhaps in a cargo pocket. ;)

I may be soon getting a shuffle for working out, I was just wondering, do I have to use itunes for the shuffle? Can I use Windows Media Player? Thanks in advance.

fingertipsjjddm - March 17, 2005 01:12 AM (GMT)
Ok so maybe im inexperienced. As for the shuffle/itunes questions, yes. I don't believe other media players work on the apply mp3 players.

If someone buys me an ibook and mails it too me i will use it. I just havent had much experience. And now that i think of it, pc's do suck, i just can't talk anybody in my family into getting something other than a dell

HayisforHorses - March 17, 2005 01:40 AM (GMT)
I have heard from a friend that you get a itunes disk with the ipod and then you can open your files with itunes then load them onto your pod/shuffle...I need to know if this is true. I really don't want to buy songs...

Doodles - March 17, 2005 06:44 PM (GMT)
iTunes does indeed come with the iPods. Yes, it should open your files.

And a little tidbit of information...

iTunes does CD ripping at various high quality rates, so if you have a previously ripped CD that doesn't sound that good, try ripping it again in iTunes.

fingertipsjjddm - March 17, 2005 07:39 PM (GMT)
I double what doodles said. You do get the disk, but you don't need to buy any new songs, you just have to convert your songs from WMP to iTunes. Doodles, here's a question for you. When I convert my songs they are saved in MP4 form instead of MP3 form. When I then attempt to send something to a friend or something, they can't read it because they don't have itunes. Is there any way I can get itunes to just read the MP3's? <_<

Johnw - March 17, 2005 08:08 PM (GMT)
You could get your friends to install MP4 codecs.

HayisforHorses - March 18, 2005 02:10 AM (GMT)
Thank you very much on verifying that info..Now I need an ipod..

mrhorrible - April 21, 2005 02:14 PM (GMT)
And reviving this because this isn't woth it's own topic:

I once wrote something along these lines and got an e-mail back from the treasured actor and author, Stephen Fry, who said he bought his first Mac in 1984 which he claims was the third ever sold in Europe. Douglas Adams who wrote the "Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" bought the first two apparently.
