Title: Robbie WIlliams ripped off the Pink Album!
Description: anyone agree?

The singer-songwriter-superstar-smug-git Robbie Williams was on Channel 4 tonight talking about his music. And they showed all his singles released in date order. And I realised he had one song with the line 'I hope I get old before I die' and soon followed up with a song called 'Angels'.

Well the Pink Album has both 'I hope that I get old before I die' and 'She's an angel' on it. And yet Robbie NEVER mentioned the influence of They even once!!!!!

(I'm joking, here, of course, but you never know, I might have stumbled upon something here.)

I dunno. Could be just a strange coincidence. If not, than he's an idiot.

Well, bearing in mind that most of Robbie's succesful stuff has been written / cowritten by Guy Chambers (except Angels which is a Karl Wallinger song) and that Chambers was once in both the Waterboys and World Party (who have both shared bills with TMBG) it's not impossible. Tenuous though.

Gosh. GerryW, you are clever to know all that. :D

It doesn't make any difference, cos you can't copyright song names anyway. The Johns themselves admitted nicking the name 'Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love' off someone or other.

It's the same thing in the music world as it is in the art world, people are eternally copying other people's styles/whatever to create something of their own, so essentially everyone's ideas are related to someone else's in one way or another, even if that relation doesn't have that big of an impact. That being said, of course, humans are terribly influential on other humans even in an indirect way or environment.

on a similar note, Modest Mouse stole "laugh hard, it's a long way to the bank".
i had a VERY long argument with my ex boyfriend about who the "true" author of that was. i won, though, of course.

Sorry to dredge up an old topic, but I always thought 'I hope that I get old before I die' was a reference (anti-reference?) to 'I hope I die before I get old' in My Generation by The Who. :)

I mean Gerry of course (just to save any confusion)

Herring - June 4, 2005 04:24 PM (GMT)
I don't know whether Gerry is smug or not, but he's wrong about 'Angels'. That song WAS co-written by Guy Chambers. He even won an Ivor Novello for it. :P

Okay then. :D
