Title: Jen's Discussion week #4
Description: Only a few weeks late..
LoveJohnX2 - September 27, 2004 04:17 AM (GMT)
I know, I know. I've been lazy. In fact..I'm still lazy so I'm going to with the easiest suggestion I got. I want to go with all of them, but some will take more thought than others to get all my facts right that are in my head. I want to write about the stuff I know about..not steal it off websites.
Speaking of stealing of websites..I was going to just go in order with the suggestions..which would make the themes one the first one to do. As much as I like that idea, I can't do it. If I were to do that discussion..I'd just be stealing my info straight from this site because they have it organized so well. So, I'll just give you the website for the TMBG themes.
TMBW ThemesAnyway..so onto the easy discussion. I promise, I'll try other people's suggestions too. I love them all! But today, boys and girls, let us discuss NO! because..it's cool even for a little kids CD!
1.Fibber Island - Love it. I can't sit still while listening to this song. I'm bouncing around right now.
2. Four of Two - Like it. Aww..I think this song is so cute. But..since I like to nitpick things..don't ya think SOMEONE would wake up that kid sleeping there for many many years? They're building gigantic metal bugs and what not..but nobody bothers to wake up this guy on the sidewalk? Did they think he was just a dead hobo?
3. Robot Parade - Like it. It pops into my head everytime I see the "Robot Parade" topic and I walk around singing it the rest of the day. It makes me wish I was a kid again so the robots would obey me!
4. No! - Like it. I like singing it to people when we're playfully arguing. I usually mess up the words though.
5. Where do they make Balloons? - Like it. I have to dance to this too. Weinkauf has a pretty voice! I still dunno where they make the :censored: balloons..
6. In the Middle, In the Middle, In the Middle - Uhm. It's okay. As a song, I don't care for it..but it makes me laugh. I like to sing along because I use this big cheesy grin as a sing it..like from Seasame Street or something.
7. Violin - This song makes me laugh too..so I'll say I like it. Some of the ways he sings is just funny. Plus it's very random. I like playing with the little interactive thing for this song too. Don't ask me why..I think it has to do with the not wanting to grow up part of me again. It
8. John Lee Supertaster - I love this song. I love it on here..and I loved it live. I dunno. Live did it for me, I think. It's just..cool. "When I was 39 years old.." Another one I wanna dance too. Can't turn down a song that makes ya wanna dance!
9. The Edison Museum - This might be my least favorite song. I dunno..kinda dull to me. It's grown on me over time, though. I think that interactive thing would scare me if I was little though. I was a wimpy kid..weird things scared me.
10. The House of the Top of Tree - Another fun one to sing. I like it. I still don't have the lyrics down. I have to read along with the linear notes.. -_- THOSE STUPID MICE!
11. Clap your hands - Love it. When I first heard this I said "I've heard this before. Wasn't this on a commercial before?" but everyone said "No. I've never head this.." But it WAS on a commercial wasn't it? Gap maybe? .................... Sorry..had to pause to clap my hands. This was a really good song to start out with at the concert I went to..it really got me pumped.
12. I am not your Broom - Like it. Very cute. I like the brooms style voice. The sweeping noise kinda bugs me though.
13. Wake up call - Okay. I dunno what to say about it.
14. I am a Grocery Bag - Flans sounds cool on here. I give it..okay.
15. Lazyhead and Sleepybones - Flans sounds good again. I like the lyrics..they're pretty smart. Though, I get their names mixed up "Lazybones..no I mean..sleepyhead.."
16. Bed Bed Bed - LOL. I find myself almost banging my head to this song. Is that weird? It doesn't make me tired. I get dizzy when I watch the little video though. I give it..good.
17.Sleepwalkers - Good. I didn't like it much at first..but I don't think I gave it much of a chance. It's pretty.
Anyway, I like this CD. It makes me happy. I don't listen to it as much as I should..

Well, ummmm....It IS New York. They still have a "Just don't get involved" reputation

Fibber Island- Great song. It's my favorite song on the CD until I get to...
4 of 2 - I finally heard the original demo of this a few weeks ago. I thought is was great, but I think I like the childrens version better.
Robot Parade - I like this song also. I do like the new live version better where it starts out as the Childrens' version and blends into the Totally Rocking version of the song. Plus it's just fun to sing "BOOM SHAKA LAKA LAKA"
No - Yet another great song.
WDTMB - I really enjoy this song. And I believe the correct answer to the question is "In a Balloon Factory"
ITM - I actually enjoy this song a lot. It's so silly and catchy that I find myself singing along with it whenever I hear it. Plus I think Robin Goldwasser can really sing
Violin - I'm not sure the purpose of this song except for that the words he uses in it are kind of fun to say.
JLS - I like this song better live also. It's not one of my favorites by Them but then even my least favorites I like better than most other bands best work.
The Edison Museum - I liked this song the first time I heard it. I like haunted houses and the imagery brought forth by the lyrics of this song appeal to me
THATTOTT - If Fibber Island was my favorite until I heard 4 of 2 then that song was usurped by this one. This is my absolute favorite on the CD. I know it's a kids' song and all but I really wish they'd play it at Their adult shows so I could hear it live
Clap - This is another song I care more for in a Live Setting than I do on the CD. The little bit they did on "Blue's Clues" for it ( and yes I did watch that entire episode) was one of the cutest things I've ever seen. And yes Jen, it was used in a "GAP KIDS" commercial
Wake up Call - Another that isn't my favorite
IAMAGB - An example of Giants Creativity? Not many people could take what appears to be a shopping list and make a good song out of it.
L & S - Yes, yet another great song. I like how he played with the words Lazybones and Sleepyhead. It gives the song another angle. And I like how the two Disagree by making the same statements using different words. Very clever use of Wordplay in the song.
Bed bed bed - Though I like the song, the extended use of sound effects drives me nuts. If I did have a child I don't think I'd try to get them to bed using this version of the song. Now the version sung by Kimya Dawson on the Bed Bed Bed EP/Book is a much better choice for naptime :D
Sleepwalkers- The house at the top of the Tree is my favorite song on the CD. That being said, this song follows at a very close second. I really love it when Linnell sings this way. Though I'll stand by an earlier statement that Flans has the better voice.
Artwork/CD programming- I'd like to give a Thumbs up to the Team that designed the cover art and games for the CD. After reading the liner notes I see it was "The Chopping Block". They also did the flash programming games for the CD.
One thing I noticed about myself while going through the song review - I tend to like the Flansburgh songs better live. I suppose for the sheer energy he brings to them on stage.

I went and looked at a packet of balloons just to see where they made them, and it said Maylaysia. So now you know. (Except that it's probably different in the States).
gianthead - September 28, 2004 10:33 AM (GMT)
The Edison Museum is the only one I'd be caught dead listening to, though I like most of the tracks.
It's the sounds I like from Fibber Island, but the amusing word-play doubtless stretches many a kiddy intellect. Four of Two is very funny
post more later

I wil admit to not having this CD, or listening to it. I do however have several songs from it, or have heard TMBG perform them, so my interpretations may be different.
Fibber Island: Don't know it.
Four of two: Excellent. If I hadn't been told it was on this CD, I would have happily fitted it into John Henry period TMBG. It stands on its own.
Robot Parade: Much the same. Fantastic live, excellent song, but only heard the version I have which is identical to the live version.
No: Well, I can't say I really like this. It's just vaguely annoying, although its not BAD.
WDTMB: Don't know it.
ITM: See above.
Violin: Now this one I identify as a blatantly kiddy song, but I find it amusing every time. Also performed live to great effect.
John Lee: I'm afraid I really find this song gets on my nerves. Can't really say anything good about it.
The Edison Museum: Reflects their ongoing Edison thing. Again, might have fitted on another album, although not one of my favourites of theirs.
The House of the Top of Tree: Don't know it.
Clap your hands: Very un-TMBG like. That is always good.
I am not your Broom: Brilliant. Don't know the version with the sweeping noises though.
Wake up call: Don't know it.
I am a Grocery Bag: I like it, but not to listen to often. Another ongoing thing of theirs with grocery bags.
Lazyhead and Sleepybones: Don't know it.
Bed Bed Bed: Think I've heard this, but can't be sure.
Sleepwalkers: As above.

Perhaps I should make a copy of NO! for your birthday! :D
It's not bad even if it is awful!!

...It's not bad even if it is awful?

When it rains it snows?
Doodles - September 28, 2004 03:48 PM (GMT)
I love Linnell's Sleepwalkers song. I don't know why, it might be the dynamics in it or something, but I really dig the bass clarinet part even if it is just a repeating figure.
I find myself humming Clap Your Hands all the time, it's just a nice playful song that has the knack to get stuck in my cranium.
All in all, I really loved No! and I hope that if they ever do any more childrens' albums (which I've heard they might) they'll be as good. Being an ECD is a nice bonus too.
LoveJohnX2 - September 29, 2004 01:38 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I heard they were trying to get it out before Christmas, I believe.

:P Kiddy stuff is pretty excruciating but when you get listening to album (on headphone so no one'll tell you to grow up  ) it's quite OK. :D

Before Xmas? Awesome. That's definitely going on my Wish List.
I think my list is always front-loaded with TMBG schtuff, but my family has actually come to expect that of me, and now they limit how much of that they get me. :( I think they're pacing the TMBG gift-giving so if they ever run low on gift ideas, they have something to fall back on.
Right now I've got Bed Bed Bed stuck in my head because of this topic...
LoveJohnX2 - September 29, 2004 05:10 PM (GMT)
This kinda deals with two things. The "interests" topic and here. Soo..it'll work here. It makes more sense.

This was todays comic. I AM A GROCERY BAG!
Kate - September 29, 2004 05:54 PM (GMT)
Hey - do anyone's kids like it?
Or do they think it's really uncool cos you like it?
The Mighty Big Antes - September 29, 2004 11:36 PM (GMT)
I like some of the songs on No! Very soothing and, um bubblely. Where Do They Make Balloons? is probably my favorite song on the album, the animated videos are cool too.
LoveJohnX2 - September 30, 2004 01:19 AM (GMT)
Actually..I don't know any kids who actually listen to it.
That's weird.
Doodles - September 30, 2004 01:30 AM (GMT)
TMBG is probably too weird even for the tots. They Might Be Nightmares.
mrhorrible - September 30, 2004 07:55 AM (GMT)
Maybe Their fictional kids like it

If the bag's empty, Jon Arbuckle has a MISSING HEAD? :o
mrhorrible - September 30, 2004 09:44 AM (GMT)
I don't want to be first in line to meet the missing head.
LoveJohnX2 - September 30, 2004 01:52 PM (GMT)
I WANT to meet a headless man! THat's awesome.
gianthead - September 30, 2004 02:26 PM (GMT)
If a man with no head asked you on a date how would you react? :P
mrhorrible - September 30, 2004 02:27 PM (GMT)
Never mind that, I can't help but wonder what the first thing a man with no head would want from a date :P  :P

I love that theory so much!
Henry's probably just an child actor that Linnell bought off ebay. (Forgive me for that comment!!!)
mrhorrible - September 30, 2004 04:02 PM (GMT)
Theres a housewife for sale on eBay at the moment. Great idea :D
Doodles - September 30, 2004 04:05 PM (GMT)
I thought you weren't allowed to sell people on ebay anymore... ^_^
mrhorrible - September 30, 2004 04:06 PM (GMT)
She is selling herself. I think that is allowed.
Doodles - September 30, 2004 04:07 PM (GMT)
Okay that's cool. *goes to check it out* I'm getting me a nanny! LOL
gianthead - September 30, 2004 05:23 PM (GMT)
It's illegal to sell human bodies or body parts (alive or dead) on the interenet, your own or anyone else's. All she has to do is prove she isn't human, after all what human would sell themself on ebay? HEE HEE hire me for your lawyer.
:D

I don't think that is true, but it is against eBay's rules.

Jeez, what do mad scientists have to do these days to get a decent limb or two? Man, I remember back in the day...
Hey gianthead, with your logic, you can gladly be my lawyer. :) But I don't know when I'll be needing one, if ever...

But if he doesn't have a head, he is blind and deaf. You wouldn't be able to tell him what's going on.
Wait...if he's headless, he shouldn't even be alive! Ugh!
LoveJohnX2 - October 1, 2004 01:22 AM (GMT)
I don't judge by looks. I'd go out with a headless man. Though, that kinda cancelles out the making out part of the whole thing.
Remember that one time somebody tried to sell weed on Ebay? That guy was stupid..it made me laugh..
Uh. Lemme make this back on topic. I like the No! Album :D
