Title: Spine or Spines?
Banana - July 12, 2004 08:20 PM (GMT)
I like Spine better, because it doesn't sound as poppy.

is it tru that all this spine stuff is because one of the Johns had back-trouble?or is that just myth? ;)
occidere - July 31, 2004 05:48 AM (GMT)
never heard that one (teh thign bout the spines and John)
oh and sorry to break the perfect unanimous vote but I love Spines cause it sound like a older song, it just sounds so cool.... I love them both though!
Johnw - July 31, 2004 08:16 AM (GMT)
Breaking perfect unanimous votes is OK, it looks more interesting :P
occidere - July 31, 2004 05:52 PM (GMT)

JL: I think I would have the super power of taking Advil and making my back feel better.
as said in a interview found here
John Linnell InterviewThough that doesn't mean it would have anything to do with why the titled the CD "The Spine"

87 Advil in the bottle now there's 30 left - Till my Head falls off
They seem to have a thing about Advil don't they?
klimdeeni - August 6, 2004 05:30 PM (GMT)
well not really cuz it us only mentioned twice
what about nyquil though
they practicly made an entire song about it
Hey Nyquil driver, it's Nyquil driving time -AKA Driver
gianthead - August 21, 2004 09:50 PM (GMT)
:D when the Johns mention anything twice in unrelated contexted, a new obsession is forming! :D
Guest - August 22, 2004 09:24 AM (GMT)
well what about heads
untill my head falls off
stand on your own head
i am a human head
she thinks she's edith head (noot the eright kinda head but still)
there's more too but it's late and these are the only things i can think of right now
Johnw - August 22, 2004 10:38 AM (GMT)
Their obsession with heads is well knowm :D
Edith Head, good one. I never noticed
(Any sort of head will do  )
occidere - August 22, 2004 01:05 PM (GMT)
there are a couple about headless people
one is...
simpley...
"headless"
and there is another i have heard via TMBG clock radio called oh i can't think of itbut the lyrics are about a PI or detective and he like decapitates someone (that is how i interpreted it... either that or i am forgetting lol)
gianthead - August 22, 2004 08:41 PM (GMT)
there no need to point out the head obsession
A tmbg song that doesn't mention heads/skulls (missing or otherwise) is a rarity
they have other recurring topics; windows etc.
The Mighty Big Antes - September 30, 2004 12:15 AM (GMT)
Hall of Heads
Where Your Eyes Don't Go (skull head)
We Want a Rock (prostetic forhead)
I like Spine too, although I think I know how to make it poppy sounding :P . Think of the Snail Shell remixes with a clap in the middle of each stanza.

Snail Dust by the Dust Brothers? I love that song! The final project is a whole lot better then the first two experimental remixes.

Linnell has said once that his accordion (the red Marinucci Recanti, I believe) was so heavy it was making his back ache. He also blamed it on getting older, and thus he bought the light MainSqueeze accordion we see in today's Spine tour. If you go to
Main Squeeze you can read a testimonial to their company written by Linnell.
And here it is, for your easy accessability needs:
| QUOTE |
"The Main Squeeze Model 911 is the most solid accordion I've ever played. It should meet the demands of any serious musician, whether they play professionally or just for the love of it." --John Linnell (They Might Be Giants)

Marshie - October 3, 2004 02:55 PM (GMT)
I read in an interview once where someone asked them something along the lines of if they had action figures made of themselves what they would make and Linnell said his would have a curved spine and super advil popping action, which led me to believe he might have scoliosis like I do.
I know a lot of people think Til My Head Falls Off is about someone committing suicide, but since I read that (and I can totally relate) I've thought it was about getting older and being in pain, but not wanting to give up and quit yet (doesn't say he took them all at once).
Ohh, I found the part in the interview where he said that, here I'll post it for ya (thank you Thressa for posting the link!)
| QUOTE |
JL: [Laughs] I'd have to think about that, actually. I think my special feature would be like a curvature to the spine, and you'd have a fake Advil that you would give to the action figure and its spine would straighten out a little bit or something. I don't know, I'm not articulating this very well. I'd have to think harder about this. Mine would be the one with back pain.

Poor guy, I know exactly how he feels :(
Main-Squeeze - March 27, 2005 03:54 PM (GMT)
I would vote for Spine, it has ultimate singalongability.
RE Linnell's back pain, we accordion players often have bad backs, it's because you're not really supposed to stand straight holding the accordion but have one foot on a stool to counteract the weight of the instrument. Thing is, that looks really lame, so no-one does it, and so we all have bad backs. That's rock 'n' roll!

Scoliosis pride!
Yeah, I was watching the latest go-around they had on Conan yesterday and thinking to myself, "Gee, Linnell has crappy posture like I do."
... And, uh, I voted for Spine. When I hear Spines, I almost -- I don't know -- feel embarrassed for them.

LOL I don't get back pain playing my schylling diatonic, but it does give me considerable arm-ache  I expect that's rock an' roll too

Considering the Schylling diatonics don't use shoulder straps, that's understandable. :P
I've one of those in addition to my Hohner Student piano, which can get just a tad heavy after standing with it for a bit. Hooray for sitting down. ^_^

Just a point:
Corn Mo rested his foot on one of the monitors at the front of the stage, and headbanged as he played, thus being both correct in posture and rock'n'roll
Annie-Mae - March 29, 2005 05:56 AM (GMT)
I ahve to say I like Spines better. the intro is pretty cool. Though I love the lyrics in Spine better.
gianthead - March 29, 2005 10:27 AM (GMT)
There's something girl-band-ish about Spines, Spine is much more Johnish.

^_^ no offence to Mo fans!!!

I'm afraid I can't relate to your back pains, friends.
For you see, I am a Human Head.

Neither of them is that good. However, Spines is R 'n' B, and as such is inherently worse.

If you are, I like you. You are now in the book of people Doodles likes.
Congratulations... It's not a very big book.

I wasn't under the impression that we were a rare breed. Especially on a TMBG forum.

I don't think they are really comparible, since spines is like a small album. Both together they make a cracking big album, just like old times. I do think Now is Strange is the best song of these two albums, Museum of Idiots a close second.
Upsilon - March 21, 2006 06:17 PM (GMT)
Er, we're talking about the two songs Spine and Spines, both off The Spine. The Spine Surfs Alone isn't involved.
Man all these similar names right?
